PHASE FIVE

THE MIRACLE OF CANA

Section I--Mother of Pearl

_A_ND when it was eventide, I went out of the synagogue of Tiberias. And when it was dark, (that is to say, on Sunday night the twelfth day of March), I came into Rachel's house, into the house of Simon and Cana his older brother, with James and John.

02 And Rachel the seamstress, their pearl of a mother, experiencing her change of life, lay in a fit of a fever because her sons had disobeyed her commands and had gone fishing on the Sabbath day: And immediately upon entering his mother's house, Cana told her of me, and how he was lifted up by my testimonial.

03 And when she had heard that her sons had kept the Sabbath on account of me, answering she said to Cana: It is a miracle my son, for thou hath shown me favor, and immediately her spirit too was lifted up.

04 And coming directly to her, and taking her by the hand, forthwith the fever left her, and she was able to minister unto us and serve us late supper.

05 And Rachel, the mother of pearl, and they that lived with her, brought to me all that were ill and that were troubled with evils.

06 And all of the inhabitants of Sepphoris were gathered together at the door. And touching them, as they had requested, I healed many that were troubled with divers diseases; and I cast out many evils, and in earnest modesty, I charged them not to speak about my new found healing abilities.

07 And rising very early as had become my new custom, going out, I went into a quiet place to pray; and there I sought for the Voice of Guidance, because no one in Sepphoris accepted Solomon as my new name. And Rachel sent Simon and Cana to look for me. And when they had found me, Cana said to me: Our mother seeks for thy leadership and for Elias' mantle, as do we all.

08 And answering, I saith unto Simon and Cana: Let us retrieve the boat, and then let us go into the neighbouring house of Zebedee the gifted fisher, that I may testify for John and herald in the good tidings in the synagogue of Magdala also, for to this purpose have I returned to Galilee. For it is written in the book of Isaias: 'In the day that Jerusalem and Judea shall fall, although I have a mantle, you shall not make me a healer, and neither shall I be a leader of thy people'.*

09 And having shown favor to his mother, Cana said to me: I can not come with thee, for I have favored my mother's house and neither shall you make me to become a fisher of men. But Simon who urged me to be saved by John; and James and John followed me; becoming my three holy witnesses and fishers of men.
